ANA infant and child policy: lap infants, bassinets and kids flying alone

Your guide to ANA's infant and child policies. Find rules on lap infants, baggage allowance, car seat certifications, bassinets, and kids flying alone.

ANA’s policies for family travel include a few helpful details. If your child turns two during your trip, their age on the first flight applies for the whole journey, which simplifies ticketing. Lap infants also get one free checked bag in addition to the adult’s allowance. ANA is quite specific about the safety certifications required for using a car seat on board.

Lap infants and infant fares

On ANA, children from 8 days old to under 2 years old can travel as a lap infant on an adult’s lap. Because of a limited number of oxygen masks, you may not be seated in the same row as another passenger with an infant. If a child has a birthday during the trip, their age on the departure date of the first flight segment applies for the entire journey.

“8 days old to under 2 years old (no seat) … Travel in adult's lap”

Newborns and proof of age

ANA does not permit infants less than 8 days old to travel on their flights. The airline’s page that we checked does not specify what proof of age, if any, is required for an infant. It can be a good idea to carry a copy of your child’s birth certificate or passport just in case you are asked for it.

“Less than 8 days old … Not permitted to travel”

Bassinets

ANA offers onboard bassinets for infants with a weight limit of up to 10kg. The bassinet dimensions are 72 cm in length, 27 cm in width, and 17 cm in height.

Strollers and car seats

The car seat must have a certification label from Japan (MLIT), Europe (ECE R44/UN R44), or the US (FMVSS1). The “CARES” system is also an approved child restraint. The ANA page we checked did not provide information about checking or gate checking strollers, so we recommend you confirm their policy directly.

“If you wish to carry your child's car seat and use it onboard, it must be certified in Japan (MLIT), Europe (ECE R44/UN R44), US (FMVSS1) or via the "CARES" system.”

Baby baggage

If you are traveling with an infant who does not have their own seat, you can check one piece of baggage for them free of charge. This is in addition to the free baggage allowance for the accompanying adult. This policy applies to all travel classes. The airline’s page does not mention a weight or size limit for this bag, so it is best to ask when you book.

“If you travel with an infant who does not occupy their own seat, the following baggage can be checked in free of charge in addition to the free baggage allowance of the accompanying adult. Number of pieces: 1 (all classes*1)”

Sitting together

When you use a child seat on board, the child must be seated next to their accompanying companion. The ANA page we checked does not mention a broader family seating policy for children who are not using a child seat. To ensure your family is seated together, we suggest selecting your seats as early as possible and speaking with the airline about your needs.

“Also, if your child will be using a child seat, they must be seated next to their companion.”

Kids flying alone

Children under 5 years old cannot travel alone and must fly with a companion who is at least 12. For children aged 12 to 16 traveling alone, an assistance service called ANA Airport Support is available upon request; for flights to or from Mexico City, this applies to ages 14 to 17. ANA does not accept unaccompanied minors on trips that include a connecting flight with an overnight stay. The person picking up the child must show an identification card and sign a release form.

“Under 5 years old … ANA Junior Pilot is not available. The child should travel with an accompanying passenger who is 12 years old or over.”
