Avianca infant and child policy: lap infants, strollers and kids flying alone

Your guide to Avianca's infant and child policies. Learn the rules for lap infants, baggage, strollers, car seats, and kids flying alone before you book.

Avianca has a few rules that stand out for families. Most notably, the airline does not permit children 14 and under to fly alone and does not offer an unaccompanied minor service. One adult is permitted to travel with a maximum of two infants, and their tickets must be on the same reservation as the adult.

Lap infants and infant fares

On Avianca, an infant is a child under 2 years old, specifically up to 24 months and 0 days. One adult can travel with a maximum of two infants, but both babies must be on the same reservation as the adult. If you want your infant to have their own seat, you must purchase a child ticket and bring an approved child restraint seat.

If your child will turn 2 during your trip, you will need to change their infant ticket to a child ticket for the return flight, which involves an additional cost.

“Children under 2 years old (up to 24 months and 0 days) are considered infants.”

Newborns and proof of age

Avianca has a specific rule for very young babies. If an infant is less than 10 days old, you must present a medical certificate authorizing the mother and the infant to fly. The certificate must explicitly state that both the mother and the infant are cleared to fly.

If you plan to travel with a newborn, be sure to arrange for this documentation with your doctor ahead of your departure date to ensure you can board without any issues.

Strollers and car seats

You can bring a stroller or a foldable wagon to the boarding gate at no extra charge for children up to 11 years old. Car seats for infants under 2 years old can also be transported at no additional cost on all routes.

If you plan to use a car seat on the plane, it must be approved for aircraft use. Look for a label on the seat that shows it has been certified for motor vehicles and aircraft as specified by the FAA.

“You may bring a stroller (or foldable wagon) to the boarding gate at no additional cost. The use of strollers/wagons is allowed for babies and children up to 11 years old.”

Baby baggage

When you travel with an infant, they are allowed their own baggage allowance. Each infant can have one personal item, such as a small backpack or a diaper bag, at no extra cost. This is a separate allowance and does not count against the adult’s personal item limit. This means the accompanying adult can still bring their own personal item on board.

“Infants may carry one personal item at no additional cost, this can be a small backpack or diaper bag, in addition to the adult’s personal item.”

Kids flying alone

Avianca does not offer an unaccompanied minor service on any of its routes. Children aged 14 and younger are not permitted to travel alone. They must be accompanied by a parent or a responsible adult who is over 18 years old on all flights.

Youths who are 15 years old or older are allowed to travel by themselves. They must have reached their 15th birthday before their travel itinerary begins.

Full details, with the airline’s own wording: Avianca unaccompanied minor policy: ages, fee and rules.

“For youths traveling alone from the age of 15, the minimum age must be reached before starting the itinerary, not during the trip or on the return flight.”
