Finnair infant and child policy: lap infants, bassinets and kids flying alone
A guide to Finnair's policies for flying with babies and children. Covers lap infant fares, baggage allowances by ticket type, seating, and unaccompanied minor rules.
Finnair’s family travel policies have a few key details to note. An infant’s checked baggage allowance depends entirely on the ticket type purchased, with some fares offering no bag at all. The airline also ensures a child will sit next to at least one parent, but does not guarantee the whole family will be seated together.

Lap infants and infant fares
On Finnair, children under two years old are considered infants and can travel on an adult’s lap. A ticket for a lap infant costs 10% of the adult’s ticket fare. Each adult is permitted to travel with only one infant at a time.
If you prefer your baby to have their own seat, you can purchase a child’s ticket for them. This allows the use of a child restraint device, but you must contact the airline’s customer service to make this type of booking.

Newborns and proof of age
Finnair allows healthy babies to fly from as young as two days old. The airline’s official page that we checked specifies that all newborns are required to have their own valid passport to travel.
Be sure to arrange for your baby’s travel documents well in advance of your trip. It is always a good idea to carry proof of your child’s age, such as a copy of their birth certificate.

Bassinets
You can request a baby bassinet on Finnair flights. The airline recommends them for infants who are younger than 6 months old. The bassinets have an inside length of 70cm (27.5in) and are for babies who weigh no more than 9kg (20lb).
“Please note that the inside length of the bassinet is 70cm (27.5in), and the baby using the bassinet cannot weigh more than 9kg (20lb). Baby bassinets are recommended for infants younger than 6 months.”

Baby baggage
An infant traveling on Finnair does not have a carry-on baggage allowance. For checked baggage, the allowance depends on the ticket type. Infants with Classic or Flex tickets are permitted one piece of checked baggage.
However, infants traveling on Superlight or Light tickets do not have any checked baggage allowance. Be sure to check your ticket type to understand what you can bring.
“Infants (0-2 years old) have no carry-on allowance but can have one piece of checked baggage when travelling with the Classic or Flex ticket type. Please note the Superlight and Light ticket type has no checked baggage allowance.”

Sitting together
Finnair’s policy is to make sure that children are seated next to one of their parents during the flight. This provides a helpful guarantee that a child will not be seated alone.
However, the airline’s official page notes that it cannot guarantee that the entire family will be seated together. If sitting as a group is important, you may want to select seats when you book.
“We always make sure that children sit next to one of their parents during the flight. However, we can’t guarantee that the whole family is seated next to each other.”

Kids flying alone
Children 12 years and older can travel alone on Finnair, though rules may vary by country. For children aged 5 to 11, the airline’s unaccompanied minor service is mandatory. For travel to or from the United States, this service is required for all children under 15 years old.
The service is optional for travelers between 12 and 17. It is only available on flights marketed by Finnair (with an AY ticket code) and operated by Finnair or Norra.
